Starting on the 29th of September, the sCO2-Flex project will be collaborating with the European Turbine Network in a six-part webinar series designed to shed light on the challenges and opportunities for the flexible power generation in the future energy scenario.
To achieve the EU 2030 and 2050 Climate and Energy goals, high penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) into the grid is required. In this context, the role of the fossil fuel power plants will have to increasingly shift from providing base-load power to fluctuating back-up power (i.e. ramping up and down) in order to control and stabilise the grid. However, this poses several challenges in the operation due to increased wears and tears of the power plants components, as well as a reduction in efficiency and increase of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per unit of produced electricity.
The objective of the European Turbine Network (ETN) Webinar Series is to address thechallenges faced by the EU industry and to pave the way for a carbon-neutral energy system that ensures secure and affordable energy supply. The series foresees six episodes over a 6-month timeframe and is organised with the support of ETN Globalin cooperation with five Horizon 2020 projects: Sco2flex, Pump Heat, Turboreflex, FLEXnCONFU and FLEXibilize.

Climate change and environmental degradation have posed challenges for the European Union. To overcome these challenges, the European Commission has drafted a new growth strategy, the EU Green Deal, that aims to transform the EU into a carbon-neutral society by 2050, in which economic growth is decoupled from resource use.
During this first episode, you will have the chance to discuss with the European Commission and with representatives from the private sector, the role that thermal power generation will be playing in the European Green Deal framework. During the event, the European Commission will reveal the EU strategy on thermal power generation, while representatives of the private sector will present their strategy to meet the 2030 and 2050 climate and energy goals ensuring the security of energy supply.
