This year is the first year of the period established by the European Commission to define its major programmes, the so-called Multiannual Financial Framework, which this time runs until 2027. The crisis generated by COVID-19 has meant that many of the programmes of the past framework are still in force. For this reason, many of the calls for proposals under the current framework are expected to be launched in April. Its budget, the largest in history, amounts to more than 1.8 billion, including the extra injection of Next Generation funds.

Main programmes
Among the dozens of programmes that society will have access to, Horizon Europe stands out, with a total budget of around €95 billion. This is one of the Commission’s flagship programmes for research and innovation, continuing the work of Horizon 2020. Special mention should also be made of the Innovation Fund, which aims to bring innovative clean technology projects to the market, i.e. those with low carbon emissions. And, once again, there will be calls for LIFE, the EU’s green programme par excellence, with a budget of more than 5.4 billion euros.
