Clean, secure and affordable energy future

The process of decarbonisation, reinforced with the Green Deal Call, proposes measures which will incorporate technological advances in the field of renewable energy and energy efficiency and thus build the energy system of the future.

At ZABALA Innovation Consulting, we want to help you identify the existing opportunities in each of the areas of the call with useful factsheets. We begin with AREA 2: Clean, safe and affordable energy. We identify the opportunities in each call; we show you the evolution of this sector in previous European calls; and reference projects in the sector.

Clean energy is a priority in the Green Deal Call

The Commission has incorporated Area 2 which focuses on achieving “Clean, secure and affordable energy” into the policy areas of the Green Deal Call. The call builds energy future by focusing on the development of specific sectors, identified in three subtopics:

The first, “LC-GD-2-1-2020: Innovative land-based and marine renewable energy technologies and their integration into the energy system” sets out the basis for promoting both renewable district heating and cooling systems (DHC) and combined heat and power (CHP), as well as offshore wind energy: addressing the opportunities and challenges, the impact on energy networks and markets, the management of maritime space and the industrial policy aspects of these energy sources. In both cases, proposals to amend European legislation on renewable energy will be assessed.

The second subtopic is “LC-GD-2-2-2020: Development and demonstration of a 100 MW electrolyser that expands the link between renewables and their commercial/industrial applications” In this, reference is made to something that has already been identified since the publication in 2018 of the “Long-term European Decarbonisation Strategy” (LTS) underlining the key role that hydrogen plays in the decarbonisation of certain sectors such as industry, cement, steel or heavy transport.  Hydrogen must be produced on a large scale, mainly through electrolysis powered by renewable energy. At the moment, this technology is not available with the necessary power scale. To achieve this, the development and demonstration of a 100MW electrolyser are required. This is the challenge that the European Commission intends to take up with this subtopic.

If we rely on Europe’s long-term strategy, we cannot fail to mention green and sustainable as two of the adjectives that define it. And in support of this idea, the third subtopic has been included in area 2 of the Green Deal: LC-GD-2-3-2020: Accelerating the green transition and energy access Partnership with Africa. This measure arises from the joint communication to the European Parliament and the Council towards a global strategy with Africa announced in September 2020. This communication emphasises that innovation is fundamental to providing African countries with sustainable development paths, which ensure global access to clean energy.
