The Waste4Think project promotes a major transformation of the current waste management model to meet the foundations on which the principles of circular economy are built.
Led by DeustoTech, with the support of the European Commission and €9M in funding, the project uses information and communication technologies to reduce costs and promote a more sustainable model, promoting new governance systems and business models. ZABALA will undertake activities related to project management and exploitation of results, and supports dissemination and communication actions.
CHALLENGE
Waste4Think aims to integrate and promote waste prevention actions, to be implemented through four pilot experiences in different European cities: Zamudio (Spain), Halandri (Greece), Cascais (Portugal), and Seveso (Italy), to advance in the construction of Smart Cities and to lay the foundations of the circular economy.
SOLUTION
Twenty eco-innovative solutions will be developed, that will cover the entire value chain through a holistic methodology of data management and processing. They include advanced ICT tools, but also a non-technological perspective that aims to influence the change of habits in waste management and the evaluation of recycling and reuse mechanisms.
RESULTS
The main objectives of the project are to reduce solid urban waste by 8%, achieving a 20% improvement in selective collection to facilitate reuse and recycling; to reduce waste management costs by 10%; and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10%.
