ATELIER is a smart city project that demonstrates Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) in 8 European cities with sustainability and carbon neutrality as guiding ambitions. Amsterdam and Bilbao are the lighthouse cities and Bratislava, Budapest, Copenhagen, Krakow, Matosinhos and Riga are the cities that will replicate and adapt the project’s successful solutions.
ATELIER’s challenge is to realise Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) in Amsterdam and Bilbao that together will save 1.7 kton of CO2 emissions, demonstrate smart urban solutions (technical, financial, legal, social) that support the deployment of PEDs, and support the replication of these solutions in 6 cities.
The PED approach supports buildings and urban areas that complement each other and engages citizens and stakeholders in developing new smart connections in various domains (social, financial, legal, materials, digital, energy, etc.). Pilot proposals are planned to experiment with new initiatives related to zero emissions and serve as replicable models that will showcase innovative smart building solutions to balance the local energy system.
ATELIER will present innovative solutions that integrate buildings with mobility and smart technologies to create, rather than consume, energy in two flagship cities: Amsterdam (The Netherlands) and Bilbao (Spain), which will adopt the PED innovation approach as the core of their urban transition processes, as well as for the other cities. ATELIER’s goal is to contribute to the improvement of the environmental impact and the well-being of citizens.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme, under grant agreement No. 864374.
“Atelier is an exciting project with the ambitious goal of mitigating environmental impact and improving the well-being of citizens. The pilot tests are an opportunity to experiment with Positive Energy Districts and zero emissions, and thus serve as a model for other cities.”
